Azrael by WithintheMechanism Azrael by WithintheMechanism
Ok, might need some help here. I've started collaborating with a writer, intending to create a comic book series. We're working out the details of the story, but we're undecided on what style to go with for the art. This is one of the main characters, Azrael the Archangel of Death. He's a robot. An angel robot. The other characters will be a 12 year old girl, a Viking, a Samurai, and various other historical characters. Oh, and other robot angels and demons. A robot Satan. Priests with gatling guns. Those kinds of things. Anyway, any particular style here work for you? I mean, I'm pretty happy with the design, just unsure how to present/color it.

The design at the left is fantastic. It just strikes me as painterly in its coloring and very organic with the slightly fuzzy pencil work. Heh! That's also a style I deeply envy ;).

I don't like the one in the middle too much, but the other two are both fantastic. The one on the left gives kind of a bleak, slightly wasteland feel to it, whilst the other says pulpy cyberpunk to me, so in my opinion depending on whether or not you want the comic to feel wide/open/less populated (the left) or densely populated/close/intense (the right). Both of them look great, what a cool design :D

Oooh, excellent comment. And much appreciated! I think I agree, the first looks like it will fit the story best.

I REALLY like the 1st one it gives it the right atmosphere in my opinion, lots of details w/ fairly minimal strokes combined w/ a grittier feel than the other 2 choices, going only by the limited info you posted... that style seems to fit the robot angel/demon theme you mentioned more than the other 2 although the middle one would be a good stand-in as well. the 3rd one while nice doesn't have the same kind of POP that the other 2 have...seems a little too dark & bland for a comic book. Anyways, I hope I've helped w/ my meager contribution the storyline elements offered so far in this post seem like they'd make for some interesting reading. hope to hear/see more about it.

Phenomenal comment. That helps immensely. I think you're right here, the sketchy lines will work better for the story we have in mind. I think I've been drawing so many super clean line-art robotic designs I've kind of gotten off track a bit.

That's not a bad idea. I might try it in blue? I don't know. Maybe green is better.

the first if it was cleaned up a little bit better (not as much as the other 2 in terms of cleaning mind you) would be my first choice. the second one is more fitting in a comic book setting, making it fit in better with the suroundings and enviroment, making it the safe choice. the last one makes a great finished product, but i dont really see it in a comic book setting.

Excellent comment. Yeah, I pretty much agree with everything you said. I think going with pencil lines, just a little more refined, is the way to go here.

Haha, I hate it when that happens. Although, I bet I'm not the first to make a robot-reaper. As far as I'm concerned you're free to explore the idea on your own. I'd love to see another take on it.

The last one is pretty damn good too. One in the middle just seems a little too simplified for a complicated character, imo.

Yeah, good comment. Looking back at them, the last one has decent presence, but my be a little muddled visually. The first, or at least something in that direction, might be better for storytelling.

the left is pretty epic!
but the right may go better with the other characters...

First panel.

In my opinion. Then again, I'm partial to those kinda lines.

Hey, thanks! Yeah, I'm torn. I like, sketchy lines, but I also like super clean vector lines.

Understandable.

The vectors would be more manageable for a comic, but I'm still lovin' the first panel.

regardless, what ever you choose will be amazing.
